What is an Educational Surrogate Parent (ESP)?

An ESP is a trained volunteer representing a student with disabilities in educational decisions when the student does not have a parent or guardian to protect their interests in the special education process. They protect the child’s educational rights and assist the school in fulfilling its legal obligation to provide a free, appropriate public education to the child.

Who is this training for?

Guardians Ad Litem, Foster Parents, Court-Appointed Special Advocates, Retired Educators, Graduate Students, Community Volunteers, Child Welfare Education Liaisons, or any individual passionate about helping students.

This training is designed to provide participants with an understanding of:

• The requirements for the assignment of an ESP for students in need

• The Special education process and how to be involved

• How to participate in educational planning for a student
