Colorado Early Learning & Development Guide

The Colorado Early Learning and Development Guidelines (Guidelines) describe the trajectory of children’s learning and development from birth to 8 years old in Colorado. They include a broad description of children’s growth to ensure a holistic approach to creating positive early childhood environments. For each age level, the guidelines address approaches to learning, health and physical development, social and emotional development, language, literacy, numeracy, logic and reasoning, and other subject-specific learning. Although the specific domains used to organize descriptions of children’s development evolve within the Guidelines to reflect the specific requirements of each age group, they maintain a broad view of the whole child and describe all aspects of children’s growth.

Resilience is "the ability to overcome significant adversity, while others do not." The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University created a series of videos that provide insight into resilience in children, specifically "why resilience matters, how it develops, and how to strengthen it in children."

Key Information about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

Included within this article are a series of documents, prepared by the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) at the U.S. Department of Education that cover a variety of high-interest topics related to IDEA including the regulatory requirements related to each topic.

Referring a Preschool Child with a Suspected Disability or Delay for Evaluation for Special Education

In 2015, the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) published Family/Community Guides to the Colorado Academic Standards. These guides, in English and Spanish, cover Kindergarten to Fifth Grade and Sixth Grade to High School. Developed in collaboration with the Colorado Parent Teacher Association (PTA), they aim to help families and communities understand the objectives of the standards. Acting as road maps, the guides ensure that all Colorado students are prepared for life, college, and careers. They provide an overview of the learning expectations in each of the ten content areas, along with examples of educational experiences students can engage in, supported by their families. The guides encompass Comprehensive Health, Dance, Drama and Theatre, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Reading, Writing, and Communicating, Science, Social Studies, Visual Arts, and World Languages.
