What is an Educational Surrogate Parent?
An ESP is a trained volunteer representing a student with disabilities in educational decisions when the student does not have a parent or guardian to protect their interests in the special education process. They protect the child’s educational rights and assist the school in fulfilling its legal obligation to provide a free, appropriate public education to the child.

Who is this training for?
Guardians Ad Litem, Foster Parents, Court-Appointed, Special Advocates, Retired Educators, Graduate Students, Community Volunteers, Child Welfare Education Liaisons,
or any individuals passionate about helping students

This training is designed to provide participants with an understanding of:
– The requirements for the assignment of an Educational Surrogate Parent (ESP) for students in need
– The special education process and how to be involved
– What to expect in the IEP process
– How to participate in the educational planning for a student
