New from the RSA Transition Team: Chet Quest's Transition Guide to the Future

As a parent, do you need help knowing what comes next after high school for your child with a disability? As a young adult, do you wonder how you can be free to do what you want when you want to do it?

The PEAK Parent Center RSA transition team headed by Beth Schaffner and Sherrell Bethel has been hard at work over the last several months! They, along with lead author Sami Peterson and contributing author Shirley Swope, are bringing to life Chet Quest’s Transition Guide to the Future! In the guide, Chet Quest is a young adult with a disability who is determined to live the life of his dreams and accomplish his goals. He discovers that anything is possible with the right support.

The story of Chet Quest is told in the form of a graphic novel. Readers of all abilities and their mentors/trusted adults will follow Chet as he faces obstacles and learns to accomplish his dreams. Early on, he meets Mitt Glover, a Galaxy Guide. Mitt helps Chet to see possibilities for himself while ensuring that he has the supports he needs to make his dreams a reality. The authors ensure that you, the reader, also have access to all the tools and resources you may need. There are several sections that outline support agencies, their roles, and what you should expect from them. The book even includes video links that showcase the stories of individuals with disabilities themselves and more. It also features an entire Transition Resource Center where you can locate resources, agencies, and organizations that will specifically help you or the young adult in your life. Further, young adults will be given the opportunity to reflect on Chet’s obstacles and triumphs, apply Chet’s experiences to their own lives, and identify the tools and support they may need to accomplish their own dreams while setting and achieving goals.

“When you have a disability, there are many parts and pieces to fit together to make a good life. Planning where you want to go and how you want to get there is very important. YOU get to say what a good life will look like for you! No matter how you speak or express yourself, remember that your voice matters. Now is your opportunity to speak up. Let other people know about your hopes and dreams so they can help you reach your goals.”
